WAYNE COUNTY ONE-DAY TOUR, ITINERARY #1
9:30am-10:30am
Begin your tour at Quailcrest Farm - enjoy the herbs, perennials, scented geraniums, old roses, flowering trees and shrubs. The Garden Barn is full of fountains, bird baths, baskets, dried flowers and wonderful garden surprises. Two shops include pottery, linens, wreaths, glass, jewelry and gifts. The Library Room includes garden books and the "tastiest" of cookbooks.
11:00am-12 Noon
Mishler Mill - owned and operated by the Smithville Community Historical Society, who weave cloth on their 100 year-old looms. This mill was a leading supplier of cheesecloth to the local cheese industry as well as cloth and rugs. Today you may purchase dishcloths, placemats and rag rugs continuing the traditions begun by John Mishler.
12:30pm-1:30pm
The Barn Restaurant was established in 1983. The original barn, built in 1937, houses the dining area and banquet facilities. After lunch, enjoy the view of the three acre lake and visit the neighboring Shops of Buchanan Place.
2:00pm-3:00pm
Hartzler Family Dairy, the place for homemade natural ice cream. We produce the most natural milk possible. No herbicides, pesticides or artificial hormones are used. During processing the milk is pasteurized, but not homogenized. Come taste the difference. Sandwiches, salads, baked goods and sugar-free, fat-free frozen yogurt are available.
3:30pm-5:00pm
No visit is complete without a stop at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), The Ohio State University. (The largest research institute of its kind in the U.S.) The Secrest Arboretum is located on 85 acres of rolling land and offers both the flora researcher and the plant enthusiast more than 2,000 species, varieties and cultivators of trees and shrubs for evaluation and viewing. The famous Rose Garden is a unique 2.7 acre garden featuring a collection of 1,500 plants representing 500 varieties of roses of antiquity, legend and romance.
